Rest Day
Weather: Overcast, cool with frequent showers
Accommodation: N’Atura Hotel
Feelings: Neil - Relaxed, Henk - Relaxed, Di - Relaxed
This was a good day to have a rest day as it rained frequently during the day. When we went to breakfast Tom was deciding when to set out for the day. Rain was predicted to ease off later in the day. We had missed the Aussies, Brian, Anne and Peta as they had left earlier due to a 35kms walk. We didn’t envy them! It was good to have a relaxing breakfast as we overlooked the nearby L’Adour River. Due to all the rain it is high on the banks, flowing fast and has a thick tan colour. All day the river was rising due to the flooding in the upper reaches. We noticed a considerable difference from yesterday afternoon when we arrived.
Our first job was to head to the laundromat to do our washing. It will eight days of continuous walking until our destination of St Jean-Pied-de-Port so we wanted to set out in properly washed clothes.
Mid-morning we donned our rain gear and headed to the closed markets in Aire-Sur-L’Adour. These are held Tuesdays and Saturdays. There was a mixture of meat, seafood, cheese, fruit, vegetables and lots of breads and pastries. We wondered where the seafood came from and realised that we are very close to the Bay of Biscay. Many French folk were at a coffee/bar area drinking wine and aperitifs. We decided it was a bit early and had a coffee and pastry instead.
Today we didn’t have our usual long lunch. I think we must be slowing down! The rest of the day was relaxing at the hotel. Dinner once again was at a restaurant in the town centre which was only a short walk from our hotel across the flooded L’Ardour River.
